Will Meghan Markle’s Mom Wear Riccardo Tisci’s Burberry to the Royal Wedding?
The tiniest sneak peek: Doria Ragland was seen carrying a Burberry garment bag to the airport on her way to London for the royal wedding.
Amid speculation over what Meghan Markle will be wearing to the royal wedding—we’ve heard it will be by Ralph & Russo, “heavily beaded,” and cost three times the average American’s salary—we may have gotten a hint of what Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, will wear. She was photographed yesterday with Burberry garment bag, leaving her California home for the long flight to London.
Ragland’s role in the wedding is also the object of speculation: father of the bride Thomas Markle will miss the wedding due to a heart surgery, following an embarrassing incident involving the sale of staged paparazzi photos. Now Ragland, a social worker and yoga instructor, (plus “free spirit” and “lover of potato chips and lemon tarts,” according to Markle!!!) may take her ex-husband’s place and walk her daughter down the aisle.
Although it would be slightly atypical of a royal wedding for the mother of the bride to give the bride away (although Queen Victoria did it, at her daughter Beatrice’s wedding in 1885), fathers “giving” daughters to their future spouses feels like a weirdly regressive tradition that could use an update—and Burberry is an apt label to wear while doing it. This March, former Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci was named the brand’s new chief creative officer, and this Friday, he previewed a series of photos on Instagram of the “B Collection,” with glumly sensuous models posed with their faces craned close together, turned away from the camera, as if about to kiss. Tisci didn’t design any of the pieces—they’re an edit of the brand’s existing items—so if Ragland is wearing a Burberry piece designed by Tisci, it will serve as a debut: a great way to update tradition.
