Martin Margiela Creates a Flag for Peace

Exclusively for GARAGE No. 13, Martin Margiela created a flag that flutters for peace.

For issue No. 13, GARAGE invited a number of artists and designers to proclaim their resistance, claim a territory, stand for a principle, and announce their allegiance by creating a flag. Fashion designer Martin Margiela imagined the flag above; his statement of purpose appears below.

"The white dove and white, the signature color of Maison Margiela, makes this a flag for peace without boundaries. The image of the white dove flying in stop-motion is carved into lines and printed on multiple layers of organza, the language of Margiela's new glamour.

This image represents the quest for knowledge, the expression of art, and the movement of culture, propelling us forward with the impetus of progress through an ever-changing world, as with the stealth and beauty of a bird in flight, and in this case the white dove, toward universal peace" —Maison Margiela
