“Accessomorphisis.” This is the word that Virgil Abloh, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear uses to describe the process of an accessory transforming into a garment. It is also the process that bore the custom bejeweled harness that Timothée Chalamet just unleashed upon the world at the 76th Annual Golden Globes. Paired with a simple banded collar-shirt, and slightly cropped trousers, the glimmering accent piece proved that doing the most can also mean wearing the least—serving just enough glitz to turn heads but not enough to distract from the real money maker.
This year, E! News polled that more of their viewers were anticipating what the Call Me By Your Name star would wear tonight than they were any other nominee (including Lady Gaga). In general, womenswear is more hotly anticipated on red carpets than mens, but who can blame the internet for caring about Yung Chalamet’s season opener? Despite the fact that he does not formally work with a stylist, Chalamet has impressed his fans and fashion stans the world over, cementing him as a veritable style star as well as our collective make-believe boyfriend.
After the 23 year-old actor was seen with Raf Simons at last year’s BAFTA Awards after-party, one couldn’t help but expect more Calvin Klein carries in 2019, but with the heartbreaking announcement of Simons’ recent departure, Chalamet opted for Louis Vuitton. In some ways, tonight's choice was safe: a mild adaptation of a runway look presented at Virgil's debut Louis Vuitton show. But Chalamet came prepared with a secret weapon: his mommy.
In a certified Hot-Mom power play, former ballet dancer and my future mother-in-law Nicole Flender wore an edgy black mini dress by Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh collection emblazoned with an electric blue version of the brand's streetwear-leaning emblem, over slick tuxedo pants and Cartier jewels to match her son's. It was the perfect complement to Timmy's more stoic take on perennial cool-kid chic and just the kind of couple's dressing we all wanted to see.
If anything is right with the world, come tomorrow, this couple's look will soon be ranked among the greats because facts are facts, and Timmy's mom has got it going on.
