Finally: Karl Lagerfeld Gets the Rap Song He Deserves

Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee teamed up with the ultimate Chanel spokesbro, Pharrell, to create the ultimate Chanel anthem, “Chanel.” Finally! The super-smooth song features an anthemic, provocatively mechanic chorus that you should repeat aloud any time you’re shopping at Chanel: “Take her to Chanel ‘cause she fine / Take her to Chanel ‘cause she fine / Take her to Chanel ‘cause she fine / Paint your fingernails ‘cause you fly”—repeated over and over and over. All said, Slim Jxmmi chants “take her to Chanel ‘cause she fine” 56 times in this song, and that is still not enough; I am maybe getting this tattooed on my arm.

Getting Pharrell to rap about Chanel is genius. Genius!!! He even references the Adidas NMD Human Race sneaker he designed for the house in November, which said “CHANEL” on the right shoe and “PHARRELL” on the left (also genius). “Yellow diamonds with the rainbow fire / Can’t find them shoes I designed,” Pharrell raps—likely a reference to the fact that only 500 of the shoes were made, and they were available only through a raffle at a Colette pop-up. According to Highsnobiety, they were available on the resale market just a few weeks later for over $10,000.

Pharrell also walked in the Chanel Métiers d’art show in December 2016, wearing a blue tweed coat and long loops of pearls. Last spring, he starred in a handbag campaign for the house, preempting the It-bags-for-men movement. Pharrell is truly Chanel inner-circle, which means Karl Lagerfeld himself is probably grooving to this bop as you read this very sentence. Monobrand rap songs are great for building up brand mythology—see/hear Migos’ “Versace“ and Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang”—and Chanel demands its own fashion anthem.
